Medigap

Medigap helps fill the financial gaps.

Medigap does not generally add services Original Medicare does not cover. It helps pay certain costs that Original Medicare leaves to you—such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.

Let’s talk about it

The important distinction

Financial gaps, not service gaps.

You pay an additional monthly premium for a Medigap policy. In return, the policy helps with the Medicare-covered costs specified in that plan.

Medigap is used with Original Medicare. It cannot be used with Medicare Advantage, and it generally does not cover routine dental, vision, hearing aids, or long-term custodial care.

What varies

The letter determines the benefits.

01

Standardized benefits

In most states, every policy with the same letter provides the same basic benefits, regardless of the company selling it.

02

Different premiums

Companies can charge different premiums for the same lettered benefits, making comparison important.

03

Eligibility matters

Plans C and F have eligibility restrictions tied to whether you were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020.

04

Timing matters

Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period and guaranteed-issue rights can affect your choices and whether medical underwriting is allowed.
